The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) and the Consortium
for Materials Properties Research in Earth Sciences (COMPRES) will hold
a workshop on the application of crystallographic techniques to the study
of chemical reactions and phase transitions induced by the application
of high-pressure. The aim of the Workshop is to review the current state
of this field, and to attempt to predict the course of research in the
future. The Workshop will be arranged into a number of symposia with invited
talks, talks selected from abstracts and poster sessions. There will also
be a Practicum designed for high level instruction in high-pressure techniques,
and open to all attendees at the Workshop. There will be a small commercial
exhibition. The Workshop will be held on December 4-7, 2003, immediately
preceding the American Geographical Union Meeting in San Francisco.

December 4:
High Pressure Practicum
A number of hands-on training sessions, under the guidance of a
world authority in the relevant high-pressure technique, will be
provided in half-day sessions. Attendees can choose two sessions
from the following: 1) High-pressure Infrared; 2) High-pressure
powder diffraction; 3) Laser-heated diamond anvil cell; and 4) General
diamond alignment and maintenance. The first two sessions will make
use of beamlines at the Advanced Light Source.
December 5-7:
Workshop
The Workshop will present the following symposia:
- Symposium 1 - Synthesis
at High-pressure
Organizer: Oliver Tschauner (UNLV)
Invited Speakers: Paul McMillan (University College London) and
Premek Dera (Carnegie Institute, Washington)
- Symposium 2 - Kinetics
of Structural Change
Organizer: Paul Alivisatos (UC Berkeley)
Invited Speakers: Paul Madden (Oxford)
- Symposium 3 - Theory
of Structures Under Pressure
Organizer: John Tse (NRC Canada)
Invited Speakers: Sandro Scandolo (Abdus Salam ICTP, Triest) and
Giulia Galli (Lawrence Livermore National Lab)
- Symposium 4 - Transport
Under Pressure
Organizer: John Badding (Penn. State)
Invited Speakers: Katsuya Shimizu (Osaka University) and Victor
Struzhkin (Carnegie Institute, Washington)
- Symposium 5 - Anisotropy
in P/T Deformations
Organizer: Hans-Rudolf Wenk (UC Berkeley)
Invited Speakers: Sebastian Merkel (University of Tokyo)
- Symposium 6 - Phase
Transitions
Organizer: Martin Kunz (UC Berkeley)

Student Bursaries
|
|
There will be a large number of student bursaries available to
partially fund attendance at this workshop by postgraduate students
following a suitable course of study. The bursaries will cover either
the workshop fee, accommodation or travel to and from the workshop.
Some low cost student accommodation will be available.
