This forum will be a round table meeting for ALS users to discuss and/or present their detector needs in preparation for the national Workshop on Detectors for Synchrotron Radiation Research, which will be held in Washington, DC, on October 30-31, 2000. The forum at the ALS Users' Meeting will be a unique opportunity to participate in data gathering for the national workshop. It will be informal with short presentations of detector needs by different groups and then time for input by other users. This information will be used at the Workshop in Washington to help in developing a roadmap for detector development. It is important to get input from as many users as possible so that their needs will be represented in the final roadmap. The 2-day Workshop in Washington will be attended by internationally renowned speakers, experts in detector technology related to synchrotron research, representatives from each of the US synchrotrons. It will also allow for attendance by government funding agency representatives. The purpose will be to review the scientific needs for new detector research, to collect input from synchrotron users, define the goals of detector research and ultimately to assemble a draft report which will become a roadmap for detector research for synchrotron experiments for the next decade. Because of time constraints and nature of the workshop, it will be extremely intensive and by invitation only. In order to adequately represent the extensive and diverse research community, each synchrotron's representative will be polling their own facility's detector needs. We encourage you to contact the ALS representative, Al Thompson, and to send him information on your specific detector needs. In addition, he is collecting names of scientists who are willing to contribute to this nationwide effort. |
